Fahrenheit to Celsius Calculator

Convert a temperature in Fahrenheit (°F) to Celsius (°C). Enter a Fahrenheit temperature to see the equivalent in Celsius.

How It Works

Celsius = (Fahrenheit − 32) × 5/9

Subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit temperature (to remove the offset between the two scales), then multiply by 5/9 (the ratio of degree sizes). Water freezes at 32°F / 0°C and boils at 212°F / 100°C.

Worked Examples

Example 1. 98.6°F (body temp): (98.6 − 32) × 5/9 = 66.6 × 5/9 = 37°C.

Example 2. 72°F (room temp): (72 − 32) × 5/9 = 40 × 5/9 ≈ 22.2°C.

When to Use This Calculator

Use when reading international weather forecasts, following metric cooking or medical instructions, or understanding temperature references in foreign media.

Frequently Asked Questions

At what temperature are Fahrenheit and Celsius equal?

At −40 degrees. −40°F = −40°C.

Quick estimate?

Subtract 30, then halve. For example, 70°F: 70−30=40, 40÷2=20°C. Close to the exact 21.1°C.
