Gross Pay vs. Take-Home Pay: What Is the Difference?

Gross pay is your compensation before any taxes or deductions are withheld. It is the number on your job offer and your W-2. Take-home pay — also called net pay — is what you actually receive after deductions.

The gap is typically 20–35% for most US workers, depending on income level, state taxes, and pre-tax benefit elections. For a $70,000 salary, that can mean anywhere from $45,000 to $56,000 actually deposited each year. Understanding the gap matters for budgeting: monthly expense planning should always start from net pay, not gross.

Key deductions that create the gap: federal income tax (calculated on progressive brackets), state income tax (0% in some states, up to 13.3% in others), FICA taxes (7.65% combined Social Security and Medicare), health insurance premiums, and retirement contributions like 401(k).

Comparing Hourly and Salary Compensation

Hourly and salaried pay are two frameworks for the same thing: compensation for your time. Converting between them requires knowing your hours per week and weeks per year. A standard full-time year is 2,080 hours (40 hours × 52 weeks), which makes $1 per hour worth approximately $2,080 per year.

How Loan Amortization Works

Most consumer loans — personal loans, auto loans, and mortgages — are amortizing loans. That means each payment is the same amount, but the split between interest and principal changes every month. Early payments are mostly interest; later payments are mostly principal.

Here is why: interest is calculated on the remaining balance, which is highest at the start of the loan. As you pay down the balance, interest accrues on a smaller number, so more of each payment chips away at the principal.

This front-loading of interest has a practical implication: paying extra early in a loan's life saves significantly more interest than the same extra payment made later, because it reduces the balance on which all future interest is calculated.

The formula is: M = P × r × (1 + r)ⁿ ÷ ((1 + r)ⁿ − 1), where P is principal, r is the monthly interest rate, and n is the number of payments. You do not need to solve this by hand — that is what the calculators are for.

Monthly Mortgage Payments: What Is and Isn't Included

A mortgage payment has multiple components, often abbreviated as PITI: Principal, Interest, Taxes, and Insurance. Our Mortgage Calculator covers only P and I — the principal and interest portion. The other two components vary by property and lender:

Adding these to the P&I estimate gives a more realistic picture of the total monthly housing cost. For a $320,000 loan at 6.5% for 30 years, the P&I is about $2,023. Add $500 in taxes and $150 in insurance and the full payment is closer to $2,673 per month.

Understanding Percentage Change

Percentage change answers the question: how big is this change relative to where we started? The formula is ((new − old) ÷ |old|) × 100. A positive answer is an increase; a negative answer is a decrease.

Percentage change is a relative measure, which makes context important. A $5 increase on a $25 item is a 20% increase — significant. A $5 increase on a $500 item is 1% — barely noticeable. The same absolute change produces very different percentages depending on the base.

Common mistakes to avoid: confusing percent change with percentage points (a rate moving from 3% to 5% is a 2 percentage-point change, but a 66.7% percent change); and confusing percent change with a percentage of a total (which is a different calculation entirely).

How Gas Price Changes Affect Your Budget

Fuel costs are highly visible because the price is displayed at every gas station and changes frequently. But the actual budget impact depends on how much you drive and what your vehicle's fuel economy is.

A driver doing 1,200 miles per month in a 25 MPG vehicle uses 48 gallons of gas. A $0.50/gallon increase costs that driver $24 more per month — about $288 per year. The same price increase for a driver in a 40 MPG hybrid costs only $15/month ($180/year). Fuel economy is the multiplier that determines how much gas prices actually matter to your specific budget.

This also works in reverse: the annual fuel savings from upgrading to a more efficient vehicle can be calculated the same way, by entering different MPG values with the same monthly miles.
