Percentage Calculator

This calculator finds what percentage one number (the part) is of another number (the whole). Enter the part and the whole to see the percentage.

How It Works

Percentage = (Part ÷ Whole) × 100

Divide the part by the whole, then multiply by 100 to express the result as a percentage. The "whole" is always the reference — the total or base quantity. The "part" is the portion you are measuring. If the part is larger than the whole, the percentage will be greater than 100%.

Worked Examples

Example 1. What percent of 80 is 20? (20 ÷ 80) × 100 = 25%.

Example 2. A student scored 47 out of 50. (47 ÷ 50) × 100 = 94%.

When to Use This Calculator

Use when calculating test scores, figuring what share of a budget a line item represents, or determining a discount as a percentage of original price.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between this and percent change?

This calculator finds what share part is of whole. Percent change measures how much a value grew or shrank relative to its starting point — a different question.

Can the percentage be over 100?

Yes. If part exceeds whole, the result is greater than 100%. For example, 120 is 150% of 80.

How do I find the part if I know the percentage?

Multiply the whole by the percentage divided by 100. For example, 25% of 80 = 80 × 0.25 = 20.
