Tip Calculator

This calculator computes the tip amount, total bill, and per-person share. Enter the bill subtotal, the tip percentage, and the number of people splitting the bill.

How It Works

Tip amount = Bill × (Tip % ÷ 100) | Total = Bill + Tip | Per person = Total ÷ Number of people

Multiply the pre-tax bill by the tip rate to get the tip amount. Add tip to the bill for the total. Divide the total by the number of diners for an even split. Common tip rates in the US: 15% (acceptable), 18% (good service), 20% (great service), 25%+ (exceptional).

Worked Examples

Example 1. $60 bill, 20% tip, 3 people. Tip = $12. Total = $72. Per person = $24.00.

Example 2. $145 bill, 18% tip, 2 people. Tip = $26.10. Total = $171.10. Per person = $85.55.

When to Use This Calculator

Use at restaurants, for ride-share tips, hotel housekeeping, or any service where a gratuity is expected.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Either is acceptable. Tipping on the pre-tax amount is slightly more common, but tipping on the total is also widely practiced.

What is a standard tip for restaurant service?

15–20% is typical in the US. 18–22% for good service. 25%+ for exceptional service. Poor service: 10%, or discuss the issue with a manager.

What if people want to split unevenly?

This calculator divides the bill evenly. For uneven splits, track individual orders separately and add a proportional tip to each.
